Picture this: dining at a restaurant that’s basically like going to Grandma’s house. It would have big tables, a cozy atmosphere, and heaping portions. What would you pay for delicious, home-made food served with love?
Well, this place exists, and if you’re going for breakfast, the answer is $17.
I experienced it with my family last weekend on our mini-vacay to Nashville, Tennessee. It’s called Monell’s, and it’s not to be missed.
Unassuming on the outside, warm and homey on the inside, this place is a revelation in casual dining.
We showed up around 9:20 and the six of us were escorted to a large table where we joined three friendly gentlemen who were just digging into a big plate of cinnamon buns. The hostess told us “everything gets passed to the left” and retreated back to her post, no menus, no specials.
As soon as we sat down, biscuits and gravy showed up. Then cinnamon apples, then cheese grits, then a heaping plate of meat, then pancakes, then fried chicken, then scrambled eggs… I had to keep eating to clear space on my plate as each new thing arrived.
When we were ready to pop, we paid the tab and waddled out.
While the breakfast was hangover Heaven (not that I had one), the other meals would definitely be worth a try. The homemade fried chicken shows up at every meal, but the rest of the menu is just written on an 8×11” sheet of paper up front. Everyone gets everything- no tough decisions required.
