Homemade Pretzels

This week flew by.  Jason left Monday, I had dinner with friends Tuesday, Jason came home Wednesday, we had a dinner date Thursday, and Friday we went to see Wanderlust (which was good, but not quite as good as I was expecting).

To celebrate the end of a long and busy week, I thought I’d try baking something new: pretzels.  They were good straight from the oven, but once I brushed them with melted butter and sprinkled them with cinnamon and sugar, they were heavenly!  If you make these, you have to promise me you’ll eat them that way.  Pinkie Swear?  OK.

I adapted the recipe from the Get Off Your Butt and Bake blog.  She says to use 3 cups of all-purpose flower, but I substituted one of the cups for whole wheat flower.  Unless you want a whole wheat flavor, I don’t recommend following my lead.

I also played about with shapes a bit.  I made classic twists, little bites, and sticks (at Jason’s request).

Until now, I don’t think Jason has ever eaten anything I’ve baked.  He might taste it, but he’d never eat a whole cupcake or a whole cookie.  He ate TWO pretzel sticks!  It was a momentous occasion.

One note: They don’t seem to keep very well.  I let them cool for about an hour before putting them in a ziplock bag last night.  As you can see in the second picture, the salt has dissolved and there are some soggy patches.

I was just researching homemade graham crackers with summer s’mores in mind! Can’t start practicing because that would require a functioning kitchen. Your pretzels look delicious. Jason is succumbing to your baking magic.

Umm genius! I will definitely have to try this. They look so delicious…and so does everything else on here. I’ll make sure to visit frequently. 🙂
